Grant Contract Signing Ceremony for the Project for Building Protective Walls in Sapwuahfik Atoll, Pohnpei State

On February 18, 2016, the Grant Contract Signing Ceremony was held for the Project for Building Protective Walls in Sapwuahfik Atoll, Pohnpei State which provided Sapwuahfik Municipal Government with US$55,057 under Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects.
The goal for this project is to provide the Sapwuahfik community with three (3) concrete walls which improves food security and sanitation in the Ngatik island and Ward island where Taro patches and residential homes will be protected from damage caused by pigs, rats, and high waves.
In his chief guest speech, Ambassador Masaki Sakai noted Japan has a large number of small, remote islands as like the islands in Sapwuahfik Atoll. He expressed his sympathies for people residing in islands, as it is hard for them to construct and maintain basic infrastructure. He showed his excitement about implementing the project with the Sapwuahfik community, where unique cultural traditions and great nature are preserved. In his speech of acknowledgement, Mr. Kapino Neior, Mayor of Sapwuahfik Municipal Government, stated that he was pleased to witness a history making moment for the Sapwuahfik community and expressed his sincere appreciation to the government and people of Japan.
Presented at the ceremony were H.E. Pershila Paul, Traditional Leader of Sapwuahfik , Senator Stevick Edwin, Pohnpei State Legislature, staffs of Sapwuahfik Municipal Government, and staffs of the Embassy of Japan in the FSM.
