Introducing Japanese Culture: 🎋Tanabata Festival🎋

2026/7/2
Tanabata is one traditional festival in Japan celebrated each year on July 7, in tribute to the legend of the two lovers Orihime, Vega in the constellation of Lyra, and Hikoboshi, Altair in the constellation of Aquila, who became separated by the Milky Way. They were allowed to meet by coming across the Milky Way only once a year. In Japan, people wish it will not rain on the day as it is believed that the two lovers cannot meet each other if it rains and the Milky way swells.

During the festival, there is a custom that people write their wishes on “tanzaku”, which are colorful strips of paper, and hang them on bamboo branches in the hope that these wishes would come true. In celebration of tanabata, the Embassy has a display of tanabata decorations.
