2026/3/20
On March 5, Ambassador Kagomiya signed the Grant Contract for “The Project for the Response to Oil Leakage from Sunken Ship in Chuuk Lagoon” with the Chuuk State Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), at the Embassy of Japan in the FSM.
The US$666,659 Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Project will cover the cost of constructing a warehouse to safely store the oil collected from the sunken ships by Japan Mine Action Service (JMAS), and provide equipment and kits including oil absorbent pads, oil absorbent booms, oil skimmer pump, and self-inflating booms to prepare for future possible oil leakages. The grant aid also includes the procurement of an incinerator for burning and recycling the collected oil and the used cleaning kits.
Following the emergency assistance including oil absorbent boom and other equipment in February to help Chuuk EPA’s activity to clean up the shore of Uman Island which was contaminated by the oil leak accident last September, the Government of Japan is determined to provide further aid including this grant.
Mr. Bradford Mori, Executive Director of Chuuk State Environmental Protection Agency, Ms. Abigail Kim-Lambert, Assistant Secretary of the FSM Department of Environment, Climate Change and Emergency Management, and Mr. Kalvin Ehmes, Deputy Assistant Secretary of the FSM Department of Foreign Affairs, also attended the signing ceremony and gave their remarks, expressed their gratitude and appreciation to the people and Government of Japan.
