Signing Ceremony with Japan Mine Action Service (JMAS)

On February 26, 2026, Ambassador Kagomiya and Mr. Tetsuya Uchiyama, Representative of Japan Mine Action Service (JMAS) Chuuk Office, signed the contract to continue the project to collect oil from Sunken Warships in Chuuk Lagoon. This project aims to survey, the status of vessels that sank during WWII and have corroded and deteriorated, to efficiently and safely recover oil from these ships, and to reduce the risk of oil spills that could have adverse effects on the environment.
 
Prior to the signing, Mr. Uchiyama provided an explanation about the progress of this fiscal year’s project, including that the pace of oil collection, which had been temporarily curtailed due to shortage of storage places for the collected oil.
 
The Ambassador expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the activities of JMAS, which are also expected by the Government of the Federated States of Micronesia, and expressed his hope that JMAS will continue to engage in this extremely difficult work safely.
