2026/1/23
From January 8-11, 2026, a Diet Delegation from the House of Councillors ODA Committee composed of Mr. Toshiharu FURUKAWA (leader), Mr. Taro YAMADA, Mr. Jiro HATA, and Ms. Mami TAMURA, visited the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) to survey Japan's ODA assistance to the FSM.
On January 9th, the delegation visited the site of the Pohnpei Port expansion project, which is being implemented with Japan’s assistance. This project is the largest assistance from Japan to the FSM and construction is currently underway. During the visit, gratitude for Japan's assistance was expressed by the General Manager of the Pohnpei Port Authority. Additionally, representatives from Wakachiku Construction Co., Ltd., which is undertaking the construction, and Echo Corporation, which manages the construction, provided an overview of the project. The delegation asked questions about the progress of the construction and exchanged opinions.
Furthermore, the delegation observed the activities of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) overseas cooperation volunteers (in mathematics education, physical therapy, and baseball) active in the Federated States of Micronesia. The delegation asked questions about the volunteers' activities and the local situation in each field and exchanged opinions.
In addition, the delegation visited infrastructure facilities and schools that Japan had supported in the past.
The delegation also visited the Pohnpei Association Memorial Monument, which was erected to pray for the repose of those who dedicated themselves to the development and cultural enhancement of Pohnpei Island during Japan's mandatory administration and those who perished during the Pacific War, and offered prayers and flowers.
