A Japanese Diet ODA Delegation (1): Courtesy Calls

From January 8-11, 2026, a Diet Delegation from the House of Councillors ODA Committee composed of Mr. Toshiharu FURUKAWA (Leader), Mr. Taro YAMADA, Mr. Jiro HATA, and Ms. Mami TAMURA, visited the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). During the visit, the delegation paid a few courtesy calls to high-level officials of the FSM and exchanged views on Japan's ODA assistance and strengthening friendly relations between Japan and FSM.
 
 (1) On January 8th, the delegation paid a courtesy call on Mr. Wesley W. Simina, President of the FSM, Mr. Aren B. Palik, Vice President of the FSM, Mr. Carlson D. Apis, Secretary of the Department of the Transportation, Communications and Infrastructure of the FSM, The Honorable Andrew Yatilman, Secretary of Department of Environment, Climate Change and Emergency Management of the FSM, and Mr. Ricky F. Cantero, Acting Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs of the FSM. President Simina expressed FSM’s gratitude toward Japan's assistance thus far, reaffirmed the “Kizuna” (friendly relations) based on the long friendly history between Japan and the FSM, and exchanged views on Japan's ODA assistance and the challenges faced by the FSM.
 
 (2) On January 9th, the delegation paid a courtesy call on Mr. Esmond B. Moses, Speaker, Senator Fabian S. Nimea, and Senator Jeremy W. Mudong of the Congress of the FSM. Speaker Moses expressed his gratitude for Japan's assistance in infrastructure, including the ongoing Pohnpei Port expansion project, and exchanged views on the impact of climate change on fisheries, which is a major industry in the FSM.
 
 (3) On January 9th, the delegation paid a courtesy call on Mr. Stevenson Joseph, Governor of Pohnpei State. Governor Joseph expressed his gratitude for the delegation's visit and exchanged views on the various topics including infrastructure assistance and its publicities, waste management, and stable power supply issues.
