Tanabata Celebration

2025/6/27
Tanabata is celebrated each year on July 7th. Tanabata refers to the legend of the two lovers, Orihime, Vega in the constellation of Lyra, and Hikoboshi, Altair in the constellation of Aquila, who are separated by the Milky Way and are only allowed to meet once a year. In Japan, people wish it will not rain on the day as it is believed that the two lovers cannot meet each other if it rains and the Milky Way swells. There is a custom that people write their wishes on “tanzaku”, which are colorful strips of paper, and hang them on bamboo branches as these wishes are believed to realize.

In celebration of tanabata, there are displays at our Embassy and at the Ambassador’s residence.
