World Environment Day Clean-up

2025/6/9
On June 5, Ambassador and Mrs. Kagomiya as well as some members of the Embassy of Japan participated in “Pohnpei Clean-up” for World Environment Day hosted by the United Nations Micronesia Resident Coordinator’s Office. UN Agencies in the FSM and the diplomatic corps participated and collected a large amount of plastic waste.

The World Environment Day was established in 1972 by the United Nations and observed annually on June 5 to increase awareness and understanding of the environment. This year’s theme is “#BeatPlasticPollution”, which bears in mind that the Second Part of the Fifth Session for the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee to develop a Plastics Treaty (INC-5.2) is to be held in Geneva, Switzerland in August.

Plastics has become a part of our daily lives. We need to understand the effects of plastics and microplastics including on the marine environment and to the human body, and to find a solution to plastic pollution through the 5Rs, to Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rethink.
