Handover Ceremony for Strengthening Infectious Diseases Border Control
2025/5/27
On May 23, the handover ceremony for the “Project on Strengthening Capacity of Border Control for Responding to Infectious Diseases in Pacific Island Countries” was held at the Pohnpei Port Authority.
This project, implemented with a grant aid of USD 7,500,299 through the International Organization for Migration (IOM), targets seven Pacific Island countries, including the Federated States of Micronesia. It aims to strengthen border control and immigration systems against infection diseases in the Pacific region by providing infrastructure, equipment, and technical cooperation.
At the handover ceremony, medical equipment, personal protective equipment, infection prevention and hygiene supplies, and information and communication technology equipment—primarily for airport use—were formally handed over. These supplies have already been distributed to the other three states of Yap, Chuuk, and Kosrae. As these three states currently lack airport quarantine facilities, the project budget also supports the construction of such facilities.
In his speech at the ceremony, Ambassador Kagomiya, recalling various unprecedented experiences under COVID19 days, expressed his hope that the support provided would enhance infectious disease control measures at airports, thereby improving the lives of the people of the Federated States of Micronesia and further strengthening the friendship between the two nations.
The handover ceremony was attended by representatives from the national and Pohnpei state governments, who conveyed their gratitude to the Government and people of Japan.
