The delegation of Kochi Prefecture to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Federated States of Micronesia led by Governor Hamada Seiji (a group of 19 members) paid a visit to Chuuku State and Pohnpei State of Federal States of Micronesia from January 14 to 16, 2024.

On January 15 the delegation arrived from Chuuku State in Pohnpei State and paid a courtesy call on H.E. Wesley W.SIMINA, President of the Federated States of Micronesia. Governor Hamada told the President that the delegation members reaffirmed through this visit the historical “Kizuna (bond)” which has long stayed firm between Kochi and Micronesia and that Kochi prefecture hopes to further deepen friendship with Micronesia from now onward in the field of disaster management, healthcare, fishery, sports and so on. In response, President Simina warmly received the Governor and his delegation at the President Office and told him that he hoped to make a little side trip to Kochi next time when he visits Japan. A significant number of people in Micronesia, in particular those in Chuuku State are descendants from immigrants from Japan, one of who is Mr. Mori Koben from Kochi prefecture. He is famous as the first Japanese national having permanently settled down to Micronesia at the end of 19th century and his large extended family called “Mori-Family” serves as symbol of “Kizuna” between Kochi and Micronesia today.

Then the delegation paid a call on the Hon. Stevenson A. Joseph, Governor of Pohnpei State and exchanged views with each other on how to promote mutual exchange between Kochi prefecture and Pohnpei State. Governor Hamada told him that Kochi prefecture would like to make effort to promote relations with Pohnpei State, let alone Chuuku State.

During their stay in Pohnpei, Foreign Secretary Lorin S. Robert kindly hosted welcome dinner and the former President Emmanuel Mori held a friendship gathering while eating breakfast for the delegation members, both of which were good enough to give the delegation members an opportunity to further reinforce their connections with Micronesian people. On these occasions the delegation members had a very good time and enjoyed local foods made from bananas and taro, and even traditional drinks of SAKAU with pleasure.
