Handover Ceremony for the Project for Improving School Environment for Palikir Elementary School, Pohnpei State

 On February 10, 2022, a Handover Ceremony was held at Palikir Elementary School, Pohnpei State, for the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects by the Government of Japan for The Project for Improving School Environment for Palikir Elementary School, Pohnpei State, amounting to up to US$76,693.

 This project will renovate the three restrooms with their 15 flush toilets and 14 hand wash sinks, and the drainage ditch cover, and will build the covered walkways between the restrooms and the classroom buildings to improve the environment of the Palikir Elementary School to provide clean sanitary conditions and keep the students and the teachers and staff members safe and healthy.

 At the ceremony, Ambassador Michigami Hisashi mentioned that the educational environment is really important for children and for the country and he explained the feature of Japanese culture to do your best and to respect ancestors, seniors and traditional skills. He hoped that the improved facilities will foster a better educational environment for the students and become a symbol of the friendship between Japan and the FSM and handed over the facilities to the Department of Education, Pohnpei State.

 The Hon. Reed Oliver, Governor of Pohnpei State expressed his gratitude to Ambassador Michigami and Japan for the cooperation. He translated the Ambassador’s speech to the students to explain that the importance of respecting for our elders, working hard and helping each other regardless of who is watching or not, and keeping the improved facility clean and undamaged. He concluded by saying that he greatly appreciates the special relationship between Japan and the FSM for over 100 years.

 The ceremony was also attended by The Hon. Sendilina Lekka, Senator, The Hon. Mitaro Simina, Senator, both from Pohnpei State Legislature, Mr. Stanley Etse, Director, Department of Education, Mr. Francisco Ifamilik, Principal, teachers and students of Palikir Elementary School, and members of the Embassy of Japan in the FSM.
