Handover Ceremony for the Project for Construction of New Recycling Center, Pohnpei State

   On May 21, 2021, a Handover Ceremony was held at Dekehtik, Pohnpei State, for the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects by the Government of Japan for The Project for Construction of New Recycling Center, Pohnpei State, amounting to up to US$87,609.

   This project has constructed the New Recycling Center for efficient recycling activities that will contribute also to improving the traffic and hygiene environment in Pohnpei State. The New Recycling Center is able to collect and pressure to downsize 4 million additional cans annually compared to the current Recycling Center which pressed around 3 to 5 million cans per year.

   At the ceremony, H.E. Sobashima Hidenobu, Ambassador of Japan to the Federated States of Micronesia, pointing out that in Pohnpei State, the Recycling Center served an important role for reducing the volumes of wastes, explained how the New Recycling Center would solve various problems which the current Recycling Center had. He hoped that the New Recycling Center would contribute to the sustainable economic and social development of Pohnpei State and would develop to become a symbol of the friendship between Japan and the FSM.

   The Hon. Reed Oliver, Governor of Pohnpei State expressed his gratitude to Ambassador Sobashima and the Government of Japan for the cooperation, stated that this project was beneficial not only for the citizens of Pohnpei State but also non-Pohnpeans residing in Pohnpei State and even all visitors to the State. In conclusion, he expressed his appreciation again for all people involved in the planning and the construction of the New Recycling Center.

   The ceremony was also attended by the Hon. Helgena Johnson, Senator, Pohnpei State Legislature, Mr. John Adolph, Iso Nahnken of Madolenihmw, and Administrator, Office of Transportation and Infrastructure, Mr. Stuart Penias, Chairman, Board of Directors, Mr. Henry Susaia, Executive Officer, both from Environmental Protection Agency, Pohnpei State, among other officials of Pohnpei State and members of the Embassy of Japan in the FSM.
