Japanese Government Scholarship

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of the Government of Japan offers scholarships to Micronesian students and teachers who wish to study or conduct research at Japanese universities.

Selection Process
Applications Open: late April
Application Deadline: late June – early July
Examination: late June – mid July
Interview: late June – mid July

Application cycle for Teacher Training Program differs from other programs, and opens in January with deadlines in February.

Eligibility
  • Citizen of the Federated States of Micronesia
Note: See Application Guidelines for eligibility requirements for each program.

Financial Support Package
  • 1-year Japanese Language Program provided if necessary (6 months for Research Students and Teacher Training Students)
  • Tuition
  • Living Allowance
  • Travel Expenses (initial flight from FSM to Japan, and return flight upon completion)

  • English language proficiency
  • Mathematics*
  • Japanese language proficiency**
  • Chemistry, Physics, and/or Biology***
*Note: Research Students and Teacher Training Students do not need to take the exam.
**Note: Applicants do not need to be fluent in Japanese, however, it is recommended that applicants prepare for the exam.

Japanese-Language Program for Overseas Students (Offered by Japan Foundation)

The Japan Foundation offers the Japanese-Language Program for Overseas Students to students in the FSM with outstanding Japanese language skills an opportunity to visit Japan to deepen their knowledge about Japanese language and culture.

  • Program Period: two weeks in September
  • Location of Training and Accommodation: Osaka, Japan

  • Students who are studying Japanese
