Japan Festival 2015
2015/11/27
Our annual biggest event Japan festival was held on 17 October, 2015 at Our Lady of Mercy High school Gymnasium, which was constructed by Embassy of Japan under the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects.
The festival was a great success. We had more than 700 participants which is double the attendance last year.
To introduce Japanese culture to Micronesians and all the other participants, we set up booths for Calligraphy, Origami, Story Telling, Japanese songs, Japanese traditional toys and Taking photos in Yukata. Embassy staffs and Japanese residents took part in, and worked energetically to introduce the culture. Madam also taught participants how to fold origami step by step.
As performance we had Japanese Fisherman’s dance by Kolonia Elementary School 7th and 8th grades, Harmonica Performance by Kolonia Elementary School 6th grader, Chorus by COM students and Japanese residents in pohnpei, piano and flute performance by JICA Volunteers and Hip Hop Dance in Japanese song by Elle and West Side from Pohnpei Youth Council.
This year we added Bon Festival Dance in the program in which Embassy staffs taught participants Japanese Traditional Dance. After a few times of practice, more than 200 participants enjoyed the Bon Festival Dance with the rhythm of the real Japanse drum and the music called “Tokyo Ondo”.
The most popular booth was Yukata Booth same as last year. Regardless of age or sex, a lot of participants lined up for the Yukata booth.
