Week (February Japan 16th-18th)

From February 16th to 18th, the Embassy of Japan held its annual Japan week joined with the 5th Japan Festival and Japan Film Festival.
The Film Festival, hosted by Japan Foundation and Embassy of Japan, was held on February 16th and 17th at Pohnpei Cinemas. A total 571 people came to see four movies; “5 centimeters per second”, “High-Kick Angels”, “Key of Life”, and “Miyori in the Sacred Forest” which were shown. A lot of people came on their way home from schools or their jobs and enjoyed the films very much.
The next day, February 18th, the 5th Japan Festival was held at Our Lady of Mercy High school Gymnasium, which was donated by Embassy of Japan under the Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects. 850 people came to see stage performances and experience Japanese cultural booths.
At the beginning, students from Pohnpei Catholic School showed a Taiso(Japanese radio gymnastics) and Ambassador Horie joined the exercise. Students from Nett Elementary School sang a song “Sekai ga Hitotsu ni Narumade (Till the World One)” with some instruments and sign language, and a lot of audiences were moved by their performance. Furthermore, people were excited by a Japanese folk song, Soran Bushi which was performed by students from Kolonia Elementary School. Kosrae Youth showed the audience their powerful Kosrae traditional performance with their “Gambare Kosrae(Cheer up Kosrae)” song.
There were four Japanese cultural booths; Origami, Traditional toys, Calligraphy, and Yukata. People enjoyed making origami, playing with Japanese toys, writing their named in Chinse characters and wearing yukata.
All the people at the venue enjoyed a Japanese folk dance, Tanko Bushi at the closing and Japan Week concluded with Ipponjime, hand clapping by Ambassador Horie’s instruction.
