Yap Improves Recycling Program Operations through Japan’s Grant Aid Program

On March 4, 2015, Yap State Government through Yap State Environmental Protection Agency (YEPA) was granted the amount of $116,218 for the Project for enhancing recycling system in Yap State. The goals of this project is to purchase a PET (plastic water containers) Shredder with accompanying set up work and purchase of a used Truck Crane to improve collection of bulky waste (scrap metal), both contributing to overall efficiency of materials and program sustainability.
Yap state has put much effort into improving its management of solid waste, recycling program through strategized priority areas and work plans within a 5-year plan (2010-2015). The famous Fukuoka method was used to rehabilitate the only public dump site in Yap and was completed in March 2014. Another effort is through Yap Recycling Program which is a state government program regulated under YEPA. The current recycling Agent and Operator is Island Paradise Metal Company, a local and private entity.
The provisions of this grant will certainly further and support Yap’s efforts to improve its management of solid waste and recycling program in the state, furthermore, it will have a positive impact on the lives of the people of Yap as it will result in a cleaner and healthier environment.
The ceremony was held in Yap state and was signed over by Ambassador of Japan to the FSM, H. E. Masaki Sakai and received by Executive Director Christina Fillmed , Yap EPA with Hon. Lt. Governor James Yangetmai, Speaker of the Yap State Legislature Hon. Ted Rutunand staffof the governmentas witnesses.
