Ambassador Sakai Explaining the Meaning of Kizuna at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School
2015/1/14
On January 13, 2015, Ambassador of Japan to the FSM, H.E. Masaki Sakai visited the Our Lady of Mercy Catholic High School (OLMCHS) in Pohnpei to give a short lecture session on “Kizuna” which means strong ties or bonds, to over 130 students, faculty and staff. The session was held at the OLMCHS Gymnasium, which was donated by the Government of Japan through Japan’s Grassroots Grant Assistance.
Ambassador Sakai explained that “Kizuna,” a word which became more frequently used after the Great- East Japan Earthquake in 2011, describes Japan’s bond with its neighboring and partner countries such as the FSM. The FSM and Japan has a long history which would explain the origin of many commonly used Japanese words among the islands such as “undoukai” or “takuan”. The Ambassador briefly touched on the topic of language, seasons, festivals, food, and many more.
