The Project for Improvement of the coast guard capability of the Micronesian Countries supported by The Nippon Foundation Hand-Over Ceremony of Small Patrol Boat

On August 17, a handing-over ceremony of small patrol boat for the improvement of the coast guard capability by The Nippon Foundation and The Sasakawa Peace Foundation was held at Dekehtik Port in Pohnpei. The implementation agency for this project is the Japan Association of Marine Safety.

This project is to strengthen the existing coast guard capability with the national governments in the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau and Marshall Islands by the support of the private organizations by Japan.

Through this project, it will become possible to strengthen the maritime surveillance capacity in the EEZ of the FSM.  The small patrol boat is also expected to be utilized in emergency situation.  Since the fuel, spare-parts and periodical maintenance of the small boat will be covered for the next coming 8 years, smooth operation is expected.

Witnessing the ceremony from the Government of the FSM were Acting Secretary Assher of the Department of Justice, Secretary Itimai of the Department of Transportation, Communication and Infrastructure, Deputy Secretary Pretrick of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Secretary Mauricio of the Department of Education and Lieutenant Governor Peterson of Pohnpei State and present from the Japanese side were Ambassador Suzuki, Mr. Ogata, President of the Nippon Foundation, Mr. Hanyu, Chairman of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, Mr.Takahashi from the Administration Department of Japan Coast Guard, and The Association of Marine Safety.  Also present were the coast guards from the United States and Australia, and the Ambassadors and Deputy Chief of Mission from the Embassies of Australia, China, and the United States.
