Grand Opening Ceremony of the Project for Improvement of Pohnpei International Airport

The grand opening of the long-awaited project including runway extension and terminal building expansion at the Pohnpei International Airport was held on June 9, 2012. It was witnessed by a big welcoming crowd of islanders who were also there to witness the touchdown of the first direct flight from Japan and officials of the government. The flight carried around 120 tourists including

Former Prime Minister Mori, and Mr. Hideaki Takizawa, a Goodwill Ambassador of FSM. Japanese Ambassador, Mr. Eiichi Suzuki and FSM Foreign Secretary Mr. Lorin Robert gave remarks and picture panels were bestowed as symbols of the final handing over of the project to the FSM.

The Japanese Government granted to the FSM approximately 30 million USD on September 16, 2008 to improve Pohnpei International airport runway and the project was finally completed.
