Embassy of Japan in FSM holds ‘Japan Week’


The Embassy of Japan held ‘Japan Week’ from October 15th-20th, 2013, in which two events were held- the “Japan Film Festival” and “Japan Festival”. The Japan Film Festival opened at the Pohnpei Cinemas from October 15th and concluded on the 19th. It showed 10 Japanese films with English subtitles. The opening movie “Double Trouble” was a comedy and “The Glass Rabbit “was animated.

 

On the opening day, Ambassador Suzuki welcomed all the guests and gave his opening remarks in front of an eager and excited audience, hoping the film shows provide a good opportunity for Pohnpei friends to understand Japan in modern and old times. Over a thousand people attended this five-day event this year.

 

The second event was the “Japan Festival” held on October 20th at the College of Micronesia, Pohnpei campus gymnasium.  This festival was attended by local people and also the visitors from Kochi Prefecture by direct chartered flight which arrived in Pohnpei on Oct 19th. It was a half day event which started from 1:00pm to 4:00pm. In his remarks at the Japan Festival, Ambassador Suzuki stated that he was very pleased with the turnout of local citizens present and the presence of Japanese visitors from Kochi Prefecture as well to witness this great celebration of 25 years of friendship between FSM and Japan. The President of the Kochi-Micronesia Friendship Association also presented his remarks and stated that they were very warmed by the friendly welcome by the people of Pohnpei and enjoyed participating in the Japan Festival.

 

The Japanese Language students from COM-FSM led by their instructor Ms. Akiko Kamikubo also presented songs for the audience. One, the FSM National Anthem and two Japanese songs. One of which is the Japanese rendition of the well-known song “If you’re happy and you know it”. Two Japanese traditional dances were performed by Ohmine Elementary students and Kolonia Elementary students with the support of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) volunteers. The both traditional dances were modified with modern movements and were applauded by the audience. After the stage performance, small booths for activities such as games and calligraphy, promotion of Kochi Prefecture and snacks were also set up for the guests’ enjoyment.

 

The event was also visited by the Kochi Prefecture charter flight guests who arrived on Pohnpei October 19th and departed October 23rd.
