Embassy of Japan Participates in the annual “International Day for Disaster Reduction and World Food Day”
On Saturday, October 13, 2012, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), along with its Disaster Reduction Management network members, held the annual ‘International Day for Disaster Reduction” in collaboration with “World Food Day” at the Baseball Stadium in Kolonia Town. The purpose for this event is to raise awareness and exercise preparedness in the disaster-prone areas, also to promote food security.
Each of the network members, such as International Organization for Migration (IOM), Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), USAID, AusAID, and many more other organizations, arranged booths on that day to promote more about the importance of disaster management and emergency food relief.
The Island Food Community of Pohnpei handed out over 400 free local food trays to the guests to advertise the different varieties of disaster relief crops and food.
The Embassy of Japan prepared a booth where they displayed photos and videos of Japan’s recovery from the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. About 150 people came to the booth and took the time to look through the photos and videos to learn about Japan’s effort towards recovery.
The Kizuna Project participants also attended and spoke with Ambassador Suzuki about their recent trip to Japan where they visited and spoke with some of the people from the tsunami stuck areas.
The Kizuna Project is a Youth Connection program that is supported by the Government of Japan. The objective is to promote other countries’ understanding with regards to Japans road to recovery. 22 students from the FSM were invited in September 2012.
