Grant Contract Signing Ceremony for the Project for Construction of Supporting Center for Persons with Disabilities in Pohnpei State

   On March 28, 2016, the Grant Contract Signing Ceremony was held at the Pohnpei State Government Office for the Project for Construction of Supporting Center for Persons with Disabilities in Pohnpei State which provided Pohnpei Consumer Organization with US$109,105 under Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects.

   The objective of this project is to provide Pohnpei Consumer Organization with a new facility which will be utilized as a supporting center for persons with disabilities.

   In the ceremony, Ambassador Masaki Sakai expressed his sincere hope that the supporting center would contribute to the improvement in quality of lives of persons with disabilities. Comparing Tokyo and Pohnpei, he showed his appreciation for the peaceful and family-oriented community in Pohnpei. On the other hand, he pointed out that the policies for persons with disabilities should be more individual-oriented to better serve all persons with disabilities, as a type of disability is different for each person. He expressed his hope that the new supporting center could promote such change.  Mr. Nelbert Perez, President of Pohnpei Consumer Organization, said that the 2010 FSM census showed the FSM had approximately 11,000 persons with disabilities. He stated that the new facility would be a model for accessibility for those persons with disabilities in the country.

   Presented at the ceremony were Lt. Governor Reed Oliver, representatives of Pohnpei legislature, staffs of FSM National Government and Pohnpei State Government, and persons with disabilities.
