Signing Ceremony for The Project for Construction of Multipurpose Center in Sokehs Municipality, Pohnpei State

On February 25, 2015, a signing ceremony was held at Sekere elementary school between the Embassy of Japan in the FSM and the Pohnpei State Department of Education for a Multi-Purpose Community Center for the Sekere School and Community.
The grant was a total of USD194,628which will be used to construct a roofed multi-purpose community center to provide Sekere elementary school and Community a proper shelter for school events that will also promote sporting activities. Sekere community currently has an outdoor basketball court which they use not only for sports but for other community activities. The problem with this outdoor court is that it does not have the protection of a roof and when it rains, activities have to be cancelled or postponed.
Mr. Nixon Ludwig, the President for Sekere CommunityYouth Oganizationremarked that this event “will witness the start of a significant project which will bind together the community as a whole for the better.” With this new Multi-Purpose building, community activities, gatherings, and workshops will be made possible.
This project was funded under Japan’s Grant Assistance forCultural Grass-roots Project. Ambassador Sakai remarked that this project will maintaina great momentum for the people and students to enjoy sports and cultural activities. He also highlighted Japan’s “Sport for Tomorrow” program in line with Tokyo Olympic games to be held in 2020, which furthers Japan’s efforts to strengthening international cooperation through sports.
The grant was presented by Ambassador Masaki Sakai to Mr. Joseph Villazon, Director of Pohnpei State Departmentof Education,and was witnessed by The Hon. Lorin Robert, Secretary of the FSM Dept. of Foregin Affairs, The Hon.John Ehsa, Governor of Pohnpei State, Sokehs traditional leadersand school faculty, staff, and students of Sekere Elementary School.
